Bathroom refresh visits across London

We visit homes in every London borough. These local facts shape how we plan a bathroom refresh here.

London water is hard, and it shows in a bathroom

Thames Water says all the water in its region is hard, because it passes through chalk and limestone; it draws about 65% from rivers and 35% from underground sources. Water above 200 mg/l of calcium carbonate is classed as hard. That is why we favour brassware that is easy to descale and grout that resists staining. [1]

Most London bathrooms are in flats

In the 2021 Census, 54.0% of London households lived in a flat, maisonette or apartment, far more than any other English region. A refresh in a flat often needs the freeholder’s or managing agent’s permission under the lease, so it is worth checking before you choose tiles. [2]

Plenty of period homes

More than a quarter of London’s homes (27.6%) were built before 1919, according to GLA analysis of the English Housing Survey. Original features in these homes often affect where a new vanity unit or mirror can sit. [3]
